Description

Lamellar armor has a long history, dating back to ancient times. The earliest known examples of lamellar armor date back to the 3rd millennium BC, found in the Sumerian city of Ur in Mesopotamia.

Throughout history, lamellar armor has been used by various cultures and civilizations, including the Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Vikings. It was also widely used in Asia, particularly by the Mongols, Chinese, and Japanese.

In Europe, lamellar armor was most commonly used during the Middle Ages, from the 9th to the 14th centuries. It was often worn by knights and soldiers, and was popular due to its lightweight and flexible nature.

Lamellar armor was typically made from small rectangular or oblong plates, known as lamellae, which were laced or riveted together to form a protective garment. The lamellae were made from a variety of materials, including leather, bone, horn, or metal.

The design and construction of lamellar armor varied depending on the region and time period. For example, the Asian style of lamellar armor tended to be shorter and stiffer, while the Eastern European style was longer and more flexible.

With the advent of gunpowder and firearms, the use of lamellar armor declined, as it was less effective against bullets and other projectiles. However, it remained in use in some parts of the world, such as Central Asia and the Middle East, up until the 19th century.

Today, lamellar armor is primarily used for historical reenactments, as well as in some martial arts training. It is also a popular subject for collectors and enthusiasts of medieval and ancient military history.
