The Spangenhelm was a widely used helmet from Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages, favored by warriors across Europe, including Vikings, Franks, and Crusaders. Its segmented design, made of metal plates riveted together, made it easier to construct while providing strong protection. The addition of a central ridge reinforced the helmet against heavy blows, and later versions included chainmail or scale aventails for added neck defense. This style influenced many later medieval helmets and remained in use until more advanced full-plate designs emerged.
