Description
The Varangian Guard was a bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperors, active from the 10th to the 15th centuries. The guard were mostly composed of Scandinavian and Rus‘ (ancient Russian) warriors. The Varangian Guard helmet was typically a type of conical spangenhelm constructed from several pieces of metal and leather, with a nasal guard and an attached chain mail aventail, or neck guard. This type of helmet was based on the helmets worn by the Rus‘ warriors who made up the majority of the guard, and was commonly worn in battle by the Varangian Guard.
