History
Knee cops, also known as poleyns, emerged in the 13th century as part of the transition from chainmail to plate armor. Initially, they were simple curved plates strapped over the knees, but by the 14th century, they evolved with ridges and flanges to deflect blows more effectively. Often riveted to cuisses (thigh armor) or combined with greaves for full leg protection, knee cops became a standard component of medieval knightly armor, providing essential defense in both tournaments and battlefields.
